Biden achieved notable successes in some areas of economics and foreign policy, but these successes were overshadowed by flawed policies, weak authority, poor decisions, and lack of planning. Managing the COVID-19 crisis, improving the economy, striving for infrastructure reforms, and adopting an active foreign policy were key actions during his presidency. However, Biden’s failures in areas such as immigration policies, lack of planning in handling international crises, and weaknesses within his economic team created an environment favorable for Trump’s return

Achievements
Success in Combating COVID-19 and Economic Recovery
One of Biden’s main priorities at the start of his presidency was addressing the economic and health crises caused by COVID-19. In this regard, he succeeded in passing a $1.9 trillion economic relief plan, which included direct financial assistance to households, accelerated vaccination efforts, and support for businesses. This plan not only helped reduce unemployment from 6.4% in early 2021 to 3.6% in 2023, but also accelerated the process of returning to a normal economic state.
Infrastructure Transformation
Another major achievement of Biden’s presidency was the passage of a $1.2 trillion infrastructure modernization plan for the United States. This plan included projects related to transportation, access to high-speed internet, and renewable energy. These initiatives not only improved the state of infrastructure but will also lead to the creation of new jobs and sustainable economic growth in the future. In fact, this program is the largest investment package in U.S. history.
Support for Ukraine and Confronting Russian Threats
In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Biden provided military, economic, and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. These actions helped strengthen the U.S.’s relationships with European allies and create a united front against Russian threats. Biden’s foreign policy in this regard also strengthened the U.S.’s global position and became one of his government’s top priorities on the world stage.
Leading the Climate Change Coalition
On climate change, Biden took significant steps by rejoining the Paris Agreement and passing supportive legislation for clean energy. The Inflation Reduction Act, which allocated $369 billion for the development of renewable energy and tackling climate change, highlighted the Biden administration’s serious commitment to reducing greenhouse gases and supporting the environment. These actions not only helped reduce pollution but also laid the groundwork for transformation in the U.S. energy and transportation industries

Challenges and Failures
Disastrous Withdrawal from Afghanistan
The withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in August 2021 is considered one of the biggest challenges of Biden’s presidency. This withdrawal was fraught with multiple issues, including the rapid collapse of the Afghan government, the return of the Taliban to power, and problems in planning and executing evacuation operations. This crisis was heavily criticized and is seen as a major failure in Biden’s leadership.
Increase in Illegal Immigration
Biden’s border policies significantly contributed to the rise in illegal immigration. In 2023, illegal immigration reached unprecedented levels, putting immense pressure on border facilities and raising security concerns. This issue also became a political challenge for the Biden administration and a key point of Trump’s campaign for the 2024 election.
Inflation and Economic Problems
Although the Biden administration made progress in many economic areas, inflation, which exceeded 9% in 2022, became one of the most significant challenges. Rising prices decreased the purchasing power of Americans and increased concerns about the country’s future economic outlook. This issue became a major topic of debate, especially in the 2022 midterm elections.
Lack of Planning in Ukraine and Gaza
During Biden’s presidency, various international crises, including the war in Ukraine and Middle Eastern conflicts, emerged. Many critics argue that weak U.S. leadership and ineffective crisis management in some cases led to a loss of U.S. credibility on the global stage. These challenges, especially in the Middle East, damaged the United States’ relations with Arab and Muslim countries.
Mistake in Re-election Bid
Biden’s decision to run for re-election in 2024, given his physical and mental condition, was arguably his biggest mistake. This decision caused a crisis within the Democratic Party and increased Trump’s chances of returning to power. Biden’s delayed withdrawal from the race allowed Kamala Harris to become the Democratic nominee hastily and without internal party competition.
Despite Biden’s significant achievements in areas like the economy, foreign policy, climate change, and infrastructure, his overall record remains controversial. Failures in foreign policy and economic difficulties have overshadowed his legacy. Crises such as the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, rising inflation, border issues, and lack of planning in the Ukraine and Gaza crises are enough to place Biden on the list of unsuccessful presidents. Furthermore, Biden’s decision to seek re-election, given his physical and mental condition, worsened the situation and left a weaker image of him in the historical record.
